Here are the details for of the next workshop in August 2023.
Currently I am planning on loading my cross draft soda kiln, it holds about 20 cubic feet of stacked wares. It will be fired in about 24 hrs +/- The kiln can use either wood, or propane, or both.
For this firing we will will both wood and propane.
My firings typically involve reduction, a generous amount of soda, and often a reduction cooled atmosphere. (This can be open to discussion depending on the arrangements and needs of each small group.)
Each week will have approximately 4-8 participants sharing the kiln space.
Cost for the five day workshop is $600 , which includes around 4-5 cubic space of your bisqueware, and use of all needed materials such as slips, glazes, wadding, wood, propane, etc
NOT INCLUDED is your cost for food and lodging.
Reccomendations can be provided regarding lodging options in the area, located 10 minutes from the Penland School of Crafts and about 1 hour from Asheville, NC.
Intimate Fire – Soda Firing Workshop
This one week workshop will allow participants the opportunity to engage deeply with the firing process, exploring their own desire to understand this part of the ceramic process. We will focus on the details and choices to consider when using a soda kiln as a primary tool for finishing your work or understanding the flow within the kiln. Participants will bring bisqueware to the kiln and will join in the entire process including loading, firing, and especially unloading and discussion of results.
Discussions around the kiln may cover a range of topics:
kiln firing theories, kiln design and building considerations, and thoughts on the lessons drawn from 20 years of watching the flame and riding out the studio work cycle. This experience is ideal for those who may want to gain a first hand experience of the intricacies involved in a successful firing.
While the kiln cools we will spend time in the studio with demonstrations of wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques, as well as taking advantage of the location in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to visit a local treasure or two.
